Meaning

O flood of great compassion that never changes! Your true devotees came first, received the gift of the matchless state, your two flower-like feet, and reached your truth. You, who have no end, became simple and came, and looked on me so that I might become a radiant human being. Yet I became one whose heart would not crack open. This is the lowliness that I, the last of all, a dog, have fallen into!

Explanation

The tenth ten are called 'Anandatheetham', the state beyond bliss. This is the closing section of Thiruchathagam, and its verses move toward union with the Lord beyond both joy and sorrow.

'You looked on me so that I might become a radiant human being' is a beautiful phrase: the Lord's gaze can turn a person into one who shines. Saiva Siddhanta calls this sivatva, the soul taking on the Lord's nature. But for that the heart must crack and melt.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.

To reflect on

Whose look made you shine? Whom could you help to shine?
