Meaning

I have no fitness; I am full of deceit. Though you called 'Come' and looked on me with love, I remain without grief, full of deceit, and I have not died, O you of lotus-flower feet! O red-bodied Lord, you and your gracious devotees rose and went away there, and you set me down here. My Lord, is this right? There is no end to the karma of worthless me!

Explanation

This verse speaks directly of Perunthurai: 'you and your devotees rose and went there, and set me here.' The Lord in his guru form and his devotees vanished into light, and he left the poet alone with the charge to stay and serve in the world.

The reason for this was hidden from him then. But because he stayed, Thiruvasagam was born. The Lord's 'delay' became a gift to the world.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.

To reflect on

Has a waiting that seemed unfair ever turned out to be a gift?
