Meaning

I go among women with smiles like fine pearls and breasts like hills, and I shrink and fall. Do not forsake your servant, see! You set me among your devotees, who tremble all over and weep, and took me and gave me grace. O polished gem, show me your feet once more, so that my senses may know them!

Explanation

'Devotees who tremble all over and weep' is the company the poet saw at Perunthurai, and the Lord set him among them. That memory is now his strength.

A 'kazhumani' is a cut and polished gem. An uncut stone does not sparkle; once cut, every facet shines. There is a hint here that a devotee's sufferings are the tools that cut and polish him.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; temple tradition of Uthirakosamangai

The Guru Who Returned at Uthirakosamangai

After the guru and his devotees vanished at Perunthurai, Manikkavasagar wandered alone from town to town with a single question in his heart: 'Why did you leave me behind?' His wandering brought him to Uthirakosamangai, an ancient shrine in the south-east of the Pandya land.

Uthirakosamangai is very old. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret meaning of the Vedas; 'uthiram' means teaching and 'kosam' a hidden treasure. It is honoured as a place where a thousand sages did penance, and as the home of a Nataraja carved from emerald. It is also called 'the first Chidambaram'.

Standing in that temple with a breaking heart, the poet cried out in fifty verses, 'Do not forsake me, do not forsake me.' The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says the Lord, moved by his tears, appeared to him again in the very guru form he had shown at Perunthurai. That grace, 'I have not abandoned you; come to Thillai', set him walking once more. In every verse he calls on the 'King of Uthirakosamangai', in thanks for that returning grace.
