Explanation

This verse praises the highest skill in handling enmity. 'Pakai natpaak kondozhugum panbudaiyaalan' is one with the quality of making even enemies friends and living so. In his greatness 'ulagu thangirru', the world rests, says Valluvar. The meaning is that the power of such a person is so great that the whole world leans on it.

Turning enmity into friendship is not easy. It needs patience, humility, wisdom and honesty. One must know the enemy's needs and fears, give him confidence and open the way to friendship. This is a great leadership skill.

Commentators give two meanings. One is making the enemy act as if friendly by strategy and making him a support for oneself. The other is truly converting enemies into friends by good will. The second meaning appears to suit Valluvar's moral path.

Leaders who turned enmity into friendship are honoured in history. They proved that the way to success lies not in destroying their enemies but in including them. Society stands together in their greatness.

In our own life too, when we try to soften an enmity, the hope in this verse helps: even enmity can be turned into friendship; it will raise our greatness and the peace of the world.

A story

Rama Accepts Vibhishana

This is a very famous event in the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana. While Rama was camped on the seashore with the vanara army, Vibhishana came down from the sky from Lanka with four ministers. He was Ravana's brother. Because his elder brother had insulted him and driven him out, he came seeking refuge with Rama.

The vanara leaders, including Sugriva, did not believe it. 'He is Ravana's brother; he may be a spy. We should not trust him; let us kill him,' they said. Some said to send him back. Since he was the kin of an enemy they feared giving him a place.

Rama sought counsel from Hanuman. Hanuman had seen Vibhishana's good conduct in Lanka. He said, 'He truly stands on dharma.' Rama declared his principle: 'Whoever comes to me seeking refuge, I will give him refuge. This is my vow. Even the brother of an enemy; indeed if Ravana himself came seeking refuge I would grant it.'

Rama accepted Vibhishana lovingly. With sea water he crowned him king of Lanka. Vibhishana became a great ally to Rama. He disclosed the secrets of Lanka, Ravana's strengths and weaknesses, and important details such as the Nikumbhila sacrifice. His help was a major cause of victory in the war.

In this tale Rama converted the kin of an enemy into a friend. It was not only a strategy; it was an act following his own dharma. It is living evidence of the verse 'pakai natpaak kondozhugum panbudaiyaalan thagaimaikkan thangirru ulagu'.

Through this act Rama's greatness rose. The fame of one who gives refuge stayed with him. Even today Rama is honoured as 'Sharanagata Vatsala', one who loves those who take refuge.

From this it is clear that we too should have the attitude to respect the good among our opponents' side and accept them.
