Explanation

This verse gives three steps to conquer enemies: knowing the ways, strengthening oneself and guarding oneself. 'Vagai arindhu' means knowing the methods of handling enmity. 'Tharseydhu' means strengthening oneself, that is, increasing army, wealth, allies and preparedness. 'Tharkaappa' means guarding oneself. If one does so, 'pakaivarkan patta serukku maayum': the pride that has arisen in the enemy will perish by itself.

Here Valluvar speaks not of attacking enemies but of preparing oneself. Strong self-defence is itself the way to subdue the enemy's pride. The enemy is proud only when he thinks us weak. When he sees us prepared, his pride will subside.

The verse gives three important lessons. First, knowledge: we must know our state and the enemy's state. Second, preparation: we must grow allies, resources and skill. Third, defence: we must hide our weaknesses and guard our ways. When these three combine, enmity subsides by itself.

In today's life this can be taken as 'readiness'. In business, raising quality and technology to face competition, and in personal life building savings, skills and friendships, will temper the pride of opponents.

So the best way to face enmity is not argument or abuse but quiet preparation. This calm preparation quietly protects one's peace of mind as well.

A story

The Hidden Weapons

In the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata, at the start of their incognito year, the Pandavas did an important act. After completing twelve years of forest exile, they had to live hidden in the thirteenth year. The condition was that if anyone recognised them in that year, they would have to go again into twelve years of exile.

The Pandavas, having decided to live hidden in Virata's kingdom, considered where to keep their precious weapons. The Gandiva, Bhima's mace, the swords of Nakula and Sahadeva were all of divine power. If they were revealed, the Pandavas would be identified. Nor could they be carried into the palace.

Yudhishthira chose a big shami tree outside the city. It stood near the cremation ground; they tied up a figure looking like a corpse hanging on the tree so that people would be afraid. They wrapped all the weapons in cloth and hid them in the branches. 'They must be known to no one' was their plan.

They lived the whole year hidden as servants in Virata's palace. They did not show their strength. The Kauravas searched for them but could not identify them. At the end of the year, when the Kauravas attacked Virata's kingdom, Arjuna took the Gandiva from the shami tree, revealed his power and defeated the Kauravas.

This preparation of the Pandavas exemplifies the verse 'vagaiyarindhu tharseydhu tharkaappa maayum pakaivarkan patta serukku'. They knew the way: they knew the conditions and dangers. They strengthened themselves: they preserved their weapons and kept their strength. They guarded themselves: they hid their identity. Thus the Kauravas' pride subsided.

That year the Kauravas wandered not knowing where the Pandavas were. When the Pandavas emerged they were fully ready with their power. It is evidence that quiet preparation tames the enemy's pride.
