Explanation

This verse tells through a simple simile an old practical wisdom about handling enmity. A thorn tree, when young, can be pulled up and thrown easily. But when it has hardened, its thorns wound the very hand of the one who cuts it. In the same way, enmity should be removed at its beginning, is the idea.

The simile comes from an agricultural scene. When a thorn plant sprouts in his field, the farmer removes it at once. If delayed, it takes root and destroys the field. So it is best to calm enmity when it is sprouting. This applies to a bad habit, a small error, a misunderstanding, hostility, everything.

'Kaazhththa idaththu' means when it has hardened and become firm. By then the enmity has gained great strength and allies. One who tries to remove it is hurt by his own effort. So if a small effort possible in the beginning is postponed, a great loss must be borne later.

Its practical meaning is everywhere. In the office, if a small disagreement is not talked over at once, it becomes a big rift. In the family, if a small resentment is not settled, it becomes years of enmity. In health too, if one neglects a small symptom, it becomes a big disease.

So this verse makes us understand through a simple simile that wisdom is to see warning signs at the start and take action at once.

A story

The Birth of Duryodhana

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata comes an incident at the moment of Duryodhana's birth. Dhritarashtra and Gandhari had for long no children. By the grace of Vyasa Gandhari bore a hundred sons and a daughter. The eldest of them was Duryodhana.

As soon as Duryodhana was born, a strange event occurred. The child brayed like a donkey. Hearing it, donkeys, jackals, vultures and crows all cried out. A great storm blew; fires arose in all directions. These were all bad omens.

Dhritarashtra, frightened, called the palace scholars, Vidura and Bhishma, and asked counsel. Vidura and the scholars said, 'King, the signs are clear that this child will destroy your clan. For the good of the clan, abandon this child. To give up one life for the good of a clan is dharma. Otherwise he will destroy the whole clan.'

Vidura said this clearly and firmly. He cited the maxim 'One may give up an individual for the sake of the family; a family for the sake of a village; a village for the sake of a country; the whole world for the sake of the soul.' But Dhritarashtra's and Gandhari's affection for their son did not let them accept this counsel.

They raised the child. As Duryodhana grew, his envy and enmity grew. He tried to destroy the Pandavas from their childhood: he gave Bhima poisoned food, pushed him into the Ganga, set fire to the house of lac, and took away their wealth by dice. At last in the Kurukshetra war the hundred sons died and the whole clan was destroyed.

This tale is a direct example of the verse 'ilaidhaaka mulmaram kolka kalaiyunar kaikollum kaazhththa idaththu'. Because a thorn tree that should have been removed in youth was allowed to grow, it hardened and destroyed the clan. Vidura's counsel was right; but Dhritarashtra lacked the courage to accept it.
