Explanation

This verse gives a practical strategy. 'Than thunai indraal' means when one has no support of his own. 'Pakai irandaal' means when the enemies are two persons or two parties. 'Thaan oruvan' means when he is alone. In such a state, 'inthunaiyaak kolka avatrin ondru': take one of the two as a pleasant ally, says Valluvar.

This is an ancient political strategy: dividing enemies. To oppose two enemies at the same time is ruin; but if one is made a friend, to face the remaining enemy is easy. Thus the enemies' strength is halved and we gain an ally.

The sweetness of the word 'inthunai' is worth noting. We should truly make one enemy a friend, not merely by trickery. If there are links such as common benefit or a common enemy, that friendship will last.

Commentators take it as an example for politics and war. But it applies in business and in the family too. When two competitors oppose us, to come to an understanding with one gives strength to face the other.

But there is also a caution in the strategy: a pact made merely for convenience in place of real friendship will not last. So one who uses this strategy must guard trustworthiness and honesty.

A story

The Cat and the Mouse

In the third book of the Panchatantra comes the story of a mouse named Palita and a cat named Lomasa. At the root of a huge banyan tree the mouse Palita lived in a burrow. On the upper branch of the same tree lived an owl; nearby lived a mongoose. Both were the mouse's enemies.

One day a hunter spread a net. A cat named Lomasa was caught in the net. The mouse saw this and was glad, for a cat is the mouse's enemy. When the mouse came out of its burrow to find food, it saw the danger of the mongoose attacking on one side and the owl on the other.

The mouse stood alone before two enemies. It used its wit. It went to the cat caught in the net and said, 'Lomasa, you are caught in the net. I will gnaw your net and free you. In return you must protect me from the mongoose and the owl.'

The cat thought: if it stayed in the net the hunter would come and it would die. If the mouse freed it, it might survive. The cat agreed. The mouse climbed onto the cat's chest and sat; the mongoose and the owl could not come near and drew back.

The mouse gnawed the net slowly. But very gradually, keeping one eye on the net and one on the cat until the hunter came. Just before the hunter's arrival the mouse cut the last strand and ran quickly into its hole. The cat, freed, ran off; the hunter returned empty-handed.

This tale is an excellent example of the verse 'than thunai indraal pakai irandaal thaan oruvan inthunaiyaak kolka avatrin ondru'. The mouse had to face two enemies. It escaped by taking its other enemy, the cat, as its ally.
