Explanation

The metaphor in this verse is beautiful. 'Villér uzhavar' are those who labour with the bow as their plough, that is, warriors. 'Sollér uzhavar' are those who labour with the word as their plough, that is, poets, scholars and skilled speakers. Valluvar says that even if you take enmity with warriors, do not take enmity with those whose plough is the word.

The reason is that the bow's wound is to the body and heals. The word's wound is to name and fame and lasts long. If a poet praises one in his song, that man's fame may last many centuries; if he blames, the blame lasts too. The master of words has the power to change people's minds. His enmity can turn into society's opposition.

In the Tamil tradition the poets' word had great esteem. In the Sangam age kings honoured poets, and there are songs saying that those who insulted poets had a stain put on the fame of those kings through the poets' songs. Against that background the verse's warning is clear.

In today's world journalists, writers, speakers and social media influencers are the 'sollér uzhavar'. They can easily spread an idea. Needlessly making enemies of them may harm our standing.

At the same time, when we ourselves have the power to wield words, the verse reminds us to use it responsibly.

A story

Durvasa's Curse

This tale occurs in the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana. Durvasa was a great sage with the power of cursing by his word alone. Once he received a garland of flowers with divine fragrance from a vidyadhari woman. Carrying it, he saw Indra coming along on the elephant Airavata and offered it to him as a gift.

Indra was in the pride of wealth. He took the garland carelessly and placed it on Airavata's head. The elephant threw it to the ground and trampled it. Seeing this, Durvasa grew furious. 'In the pride of wealth you have insulted my gift. May your wealth and your rule of the three worlds perish,' he cursed.

Indra became afraid and asked forgiveness. But Durvasa said, 'My word will not change,' and went away. As a result of the curse the gods lost their power. Lakshmi vanished into the sea. The asuras defeated the gods and seized heaven. The three worlds lost prosperity.

The gods took refuge with Vishnu. Vishnu advised them to churn the ocean of milk. Through that Lakshmi appeared again, nectar was obtained and the gods regained their power. But great effort and time were needed for that recovery.

In this tale Indra is strong; he has the thunderbolt. But before the word of one sage his strength became useless. This beautifully illustrates the verse 'viller uzhavar pakai kolinum kollarka sollér uzhavar pakai'.

Tradition also takes this story as a guide to keep in mind: a gift, especially from a great person, should be received with respect. One who does not respect a sage mighty in words loses his very wealth.

At the same time tradition also looks at Durvasa's anger with some criticism. The story also points out that those mighty in words should also have the wisdom to restrain anger.
