Explanation

The wording of this verse is somewhat intricate. 'Therinum theraavidinum' means whether one has decided to trust or not to trust a person. 'Azhivinkan' means at a time of distress or great loss. 'Theraan pagaaan vidal' means neither trust nor make an enemy; leave it. That is, in the time one is in distress, one should neither take a person as friend nor as foe; the decision should be postponed.

The psychological truth here is deep. When in distress our mind is unclear. If someone helps, we may trust at once; if someone ignores us, we may make an enemy at once. But those decisions come from a view distorted by sorrow. In a calm state they may seem wrong. So it is wise not to take big decisions about friendship and enmity in a time of distress.

Commentators explain 'therinum theraavidinum' as 'whether one decides to make friendship or enmity'. That is, even if one has decided on friendship or on enmity, one should not act on it at a time of ruin. If the decision to oppose an enemy is taken at a time of weakness, it is defeat; if the decision to befriend him is taken at an unsteady time, it is disappointment.

In practice this is good counsel for those in grief. At a great loss do not firm up new relationships or break old ones. After some weeks or months when clarity comes, decide.

The verse does not say do not trust your feelings; it says wait until they settle.

A story

Karna and Duryodhana

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata, the display of martial arts of the Kaurava and Pandava princes was held in Hastinapura. Arjuna showed his excellence in archery and won the praise of all. At that moment Karna entered the arena and challenged that he was ready to do all that Arjuna had done, and to fight Arjuna.

Kripacharya asked about Karna's lineage. He said that one who fights must be of royal lineage. When Arjuna learnt that Karna was the foster son of a charioteer, he disdained him. In the arena everyone pointed to his birth and mocked. Karna bowed his head in humiliation.

In the pain of that humiliation Duryodhana rose and crowned Karna king of Anga. 'Birth is not needed for valour,' he said. Karna, his eyes filled with gratitude, accepted Duryodhana's friendship fully. When Duryodhana asked, 'What do you want?' he said, 'Only your friendship.'

That friendship became the greatest decision of Karna's life. The friendship accepted in a moment of sorrow bound him for his whole life. Later in Duryodhana's wrongs such as the dice game and the humiliation of Draupadi, Karna stood with him. When Krishna told him the truth of his birth and invited him to the Pandava side, Karna refused. 'I cannot abandon the friendship Duryodhana gave me,' he said.

Karna was a very great warrior and donor. But the decision he took at the time of humiliation led his life to destruction. His friendship gave him firmness, but stationed him on an unjust side. In the end he fought at Kurukshetra against his own brothers, the Pandavas, and died.

This story is a subtle illustration of the verse 'therinum theraa vidinum azhivinkan theraan pagaaan vidal'. Arjuna, who disdained Karna, created an enemy at the time of humiliation; at the same time Karna trusted Duryodhana very deeply.
