Explanation

This is the closing verse of the chapter. 'Seyirppavar' are those who show enmity in anger. 'Semmal' is pride. 'Sidhaikkalaadhaar' are those who cannot destroy. 'Uyirppa ularallar manra' means that they will not live long; it is certain. That is, those who fail to curb the pride of the enemy will perish by his attack.

Here Valluvar asks for firmness in facing enmity. The previous verse said to remove enmity in youth; this verse says that when the enemy stands in pride, his pride must be curbed. If one ignores an enemy whose pride has grown, he will attack with more daring. So curbing his pride at the right time in a right way is essential for self-defence.

We must not take this as unjust violence. Curbing the enemy's pride is not merely punishment; it can take many forms such as defence, warning and showing strength. The aim is to stop his harm by honest means.

The first verse of the chapter said not to desire enmity even in jest; the last verse says that if enmity comes, curb its pride. Taken together they show Valluvar's balance: seek peace, but when peace is denied, show firmness.

In practice this reminds us not to fear needless threats, to draw our boundaries clearly and to act firmly when they are crossed.

A story

Kaliya Mardana

In the Bhagavata Purana, the Kaliya Mardana, which took place in Krishna's boyhood, is famous. In the river Yamuna lived a thousand-hooded serpent named Kaliya with his family. Because of his poison the Yamuna water became poisonous, trees on the banks withered, birds died, and cattle that drank that water died. The people of Gokula lived in fear.

Kaliya had come to the Yamuna from the island of Ramanaka in fear of Garuda. His strength and poison were great. In his pride he had made the entire river his domain. No cowherd dared go near it.

One day Krishna played on the river bank with his cowherd friends. The boys drank the poisoned water and fell unconscious. Seeing this, Krishna climbed a kadamba tree and jumped into the river. Kaliya attacked him and coiled around him.

Krishna enlarged his form, freed himself from Kaliya's grip, and danced on his heads. Each step of his shattered Kaliya's pride. Kaliya's wives pleaded with Krishna and begged to save their husband's life. Kaliya realised his fault and bowed.

Krishna did not kill him. 'Go with your family to Ramanaka island. Garuda will not touch you. Do not poison the Yamuna,' he said. Kaliya went so. The Yamuna became pure again; the people of Gokula rejoiced.

This tale illustrates the verse 'uyirppa ularallar manra seyirppavar semmal sidhaikkalaa thaar'. Had Kaliya's pride not been curbed, the people of Gokula would have continued to suffer. Because Krishna curbed that pride, the people could live.

Importantly, Krishna did not destroy Kaliya; he destroyed only his pride. It shows that the aim should be to remove the enemy's harm.

Tradition also sees this story as a metaphor for curbing ego in spirituality. In the view of the verse, however, curbing one who harms in pride is a social duty.
