Explanation

This verse gives two cautions. The first, 'novarka nondhadu ariyaarkku': do not lament your grief to those who do not understand it. The second, 'mevarka menmai pakaivar agaththu': do not show your softness, your weak state, before enemies.

The reason for the first caution is that those who do not feel suffering will not understand if told; some will even mock. So there is no benefit in telling; only harm results. The reason for the second is that if enemies know our weakness they will use it to attack us. So we should not reveal our suffering and weakness to everyone but share it only with suitable people.

The verse is not telling us to be closed people. Sharing with friends and family who understand our pain is needed for mental health. Valluvar warns against sharing with the unfeeling and with enemies.

Today's social media has fostered the habit of sharing all feelings with everyone. At times they show our weakness to enemies and rivals. So it is necessary to know the subtlety of what to share with whom.

Also, to identify who truly knows us is a part of wisdom. Experience will show who lends a shoulder in distress and who mocks.

A story

Drona's Weakness

A tragic incident occurs in the Drona Parva of the Mahabharata. On the fifteenth day of the Kurukshetra war, Dronacharya, as commander-in-chief of the Kaurava army, was destroying the Pandava forces. None could defeat him. His archery was limitless; as long as he held weapons, he could not be killed.

Krishna knew a truth: Drona had only one weakness. It was his love for his son Ashwatthama. If his son died he would lay down his weapons. Drona had revealed this weakness many times in his life. The story of how he was in poverty unable to even buy milk for his son, his going to Drupada, all his life thoughts, were centred on his son.

Krishna devised a plan. Bhima killed an elephant named Ashwatthama. Then he shouted, 'Ashwatthama is dead!' Drona was shocked on hearing it. But knowing his son's strength, he did not believe it. He asked Yudhishthira, the one man who would tell the truth: 'Is Ashwatthama dead?'

Yudhishthira lived a life without falsehood. At Krishna's urging he said loudly, 'Ashwatthama is dead,' and softly, 'man or elephant'. Drona did not hear that soft word. Thinking his son had died, he put down his weapons and sat in meditation. At that time Dhrishtadyumna cut off his head.

This story is a painful example of the verse 'novarka nondhadu ariyaarkku mevarka menmai pakaivar agaththu'. Drona's softness, his love for his son, was known to many throughout his life. His enemies knew it and made it their weapon.

Tradition looks at this incident as a dilemma of dharma. Affection is not a fault, but it shows that it may become a weapon in the enemy's hand.

The message of this verse is to guard our weaknesses from being known by enemies and to learn to handle them ourselves.
