This chapter teaches that before trusting a person with an important responsibility one must examine his righteousness, conduct, birth, learning, and his faults and virtues. Valluvar warns that trusting without testing, and doubting after testing, both bring endless sorrow.

Introduction

After 'Knowing the Place', Valluvar places the chapter 'Therindhu Theliudhal'. 'Therindhu' means to examine and know; 'thelidhal' means to trust with clarity. So the meaning is that one must trust a person only after examining him. A king must choose his ministers and officers; but this is not for kings alone. In choosing friends, trusting partners and seeking a life companion, everyone needs this knowledge.

A leader cannot do everything himself. He hands responsibility to others. If they are honest the country grows; if not, it is ruined. So the choice of whom to trust decides the success or failure of a reign. In 'Knowing the Place' we learned the field for action; in this chapter we learn about the people who carry out the action.

The first verse asks us to test a man by four trials: righteousness, wealth, pleasure and fear of death. The second says to trust one who is well born, faultless and sensitive to shame. The third reminds us that even the learned have some ignorance. The fourth asks us to weigh good and bad qualities and accept what is greater. The fifth says conduct is the measure of a man. The sixth warns against trusting those without kin, and the seventh against trusting an unlearned person out of affection. The eighth tells the evil of trusting without testing. The ninth says to test, then trust, and assign fitting work. The tenth closes by saying that trusting the untested and doubting the tested both bring unending sorrow.

The basic idea of the chapter is a balance. It is wrong to trust without examining, and equally wrong to keep doubting after a trust has been rightly given. Trust must not be blind, nor an endless suspicion. Only trust given after a clear test builds a lasting relationship and a lasting government.

In particular, Valluvar asks us to view people from many angles instead of judging by a single quality. A man may be excellent in learning yet lacking in conduct. Another may be born in a high family yet be greedy. So one must not decide from one viewpoint but look at quality, fault, action, kinship and background together. His guidance is to weigh both strengths and weaknesses, and trust the one whose strengths prevail.

The counsel of this chapter fits today's companies, government offices and families alike. Learning a person's history before choosing him, putting him through small tests, and then giving trust step by step are its practical form. Done so, disappointment lessens, and those who deserve trust receive due regard.

Chapter story

Rama Listens to Hanuman

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Kishkindha Kanda): Rama and Lakshmana, wandering in search of Sita, reached Mount Rishyamukha. There Sugriva, king of the vanaras, lived in hiding with his ministers. Fearing that these two might be spies of Vali, he sent Hanuman to learn who they were. Hanuman changed his form and approached them as an ascetic.

Hanuman spoke with great humility and knowledge. His words were clear, measured and sweet. He did not utter any word hurriedly or wrongly. When he finished, Rama said to Lakshmana, "He must have learnt the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas and know grammar. Otherwise he could not speak so purely."

Rama continued, "There is no flaw in his face; in his eyes, forehead and brows there is no doubt. In his speech there is no stumbling or concealment. If a king has such a messenger, every undertaking will succeed." In this way, closely observing a person's words, face and conduct, Rama recognised his worth.

After Rama's examination, they went with Hanuman to meet Sugriva. Friendship arose with Sugriva. Later, in the great task of searching for Sita, Rama trusted Hanuman as chief messenger. He gave him his signet ring. That trust was not wasted; Hanuman crossed the sea, found Sita and returned.

Had Rama trusted without testing, he might have met doubt and disappointment. Because he trusted after examination, a great bond was formed. Later, through many trials, he was never disappointed in Hanuman. This is a fine example of examining before trusting.

This keenness, recognising a person's nature in a short time, is a quality that every leader needs, not kings alone. Those who decide after observing word, face and action are not easily deceived.

Rama's judgement of Hanuman was not a momentary decision. He observed not only Hanuman's words but also his bearing, his humility and his answers to questions. Though Hanuman came on behalf of Sugriva, Rama saw that there was no pride in his speech and no intent to deceive. When Rama spoke openly of his purpose and his sorrow, he felt he could rightly trust such a person.

Many trials followed. While crossing the sea, working alone in Lanka, and standing in the rakshasas' captivity, Hanuman showed his true nature. Without self-interest, without seeking fame, he gave his master's work first place. So Rama's clarity was proved firm over time. One who trusts after examination finds more and more that the person was worthy of it.

The tale teaches one thing: when choosing a person, look less at titles and fame than at the qualities that show in word and deed. Then trust is not mere hope but the conclusion of knowledge. That is what the chapter means by testing and confidence.
