Not Offending the Great

Periyaaraip Pizhaiyaamai

This chapter warns that scorning people of great power, penance or wisdom invites a ruin from which there is no escape, and that respect for them is the best protection one can have. Valluvar teaches that humility before the truly great is not weakness but the wisest form of self-guarding.

Introduction

This chapter belongs to the Natpiyal, the section on friendship and association, within the book of Wealth. Having spoken of friends, relatives, false friends and hidden foes, Valluvar now turns to a different relationship, the one we have with people who are greater than ourselves in power, penance or wisdom. How we behave towards them, he says, can decide whether our life is safe or ruined, and so this warning fittingly closes the section.

The word 'periyaar', the great, is not limited to the rich and the powerful. The commentators include kings with authority, scholars with deep knowledge, people of firm principle, and above all those whose strength comes from penance. Words such as 'enthiya kolgaiyaar' and 'thakkaar' are taken by Parimelazhagar and others to mean sages of austere vows. Our tradition is full of stories about the curses and the blessings of rishis. They were not told to frighten children but to show how dangerous it is to wound the heart of someone whose spiritual power is real.

The ten verses build in a clear order. The first two state the principle: not despising the capable is the best protection, and slighting the great brings endless trouble. The next two warn that provoking those who can destroy us, and refusing good counsel, is like inviting Death with a beckoning hand. Verses five and six say that there is no running away from such wrath, not even to the ends of the earth, and that one may survive a fire but not the anger of the great. The seventh asks what use wealth and a splendid life will be then. The last three raise the stakes to the highest level: even mountain-like rulers, even the king of the gods, fall when the holy are angered.

The teaching is alive today. To sneer at a senior colleague, an elder of the family, or a person who serves society without self-interest does harm mainly to ourselves. Valluvar does not ask for trembling fear of the powerful. He asks for honest respect for their knowledge, their discipline and their labour. That respect, the chapter shows, lifts a person rather than lowering him.

Chapter story

Durvasa and Ambarisha

This story comes from the Bhagavata Purana.

King Ambarisha was a true devotee of Vishnu. Though he ruled a rich kingdom, his heart rested always at the Lord's feet. For a full year he had kept the fast of Ekadashi without a single lapse, and on the Dwadashi that would complete the year he waited to break the fast at the proper hour. Just then the great sage Durvasa, famed for his penance and his temper, arrived at the palace. The king welcomed him respectfully and invited him to dine. The sage said, "I will bathe in the Yamuna and return," and went.

He did not come back for a long time. The hour for ending the fast was running out, and a fast broken at the wrong time would spoil the whole year's vow. The king was caught between two duties, honouring his guest and keeping his vow. He consulted the learned men, who said, "A sip of water counts both as eating and as not eating." Ambarisha drank a little tulsi water, and no more.

When Durvasa returned he knew by his inner power what had happened, and he blazed with anger. From a lock of his hair he created a terrible demon and sent it against the king. Ambarisha did not move. He stood quietly, thinking of the Lord. Then Vishnu's discus, the Sudarshana, flashed down from the sky, destroyed the demon, and began to pursue the sage himself.

Durvasa fled to save his life. He ran across the world, through mountains and oceans and the heavens. First he went to Brahma and begged for protection, then to Shiva. Both answered, "We have no power to stop the discus of Vishnu." At last he reached Vishnu's own feet, and the Lord said, "I am bound by my devotees; they are my very heart. Go to Ambarisha and ask his pardon."

The sage returned in shame. The Purana says that Ambarisha had fasted for a whole year waiting for him. When Durvasa tried to bow at his feet, the king stopped him, bowed to the sage instead, and served him a meal. Only then did he eat himself. Durvasa was moved, and blessed him from his heart.

For all his penance, the sage could not escape, because he had made light of the firm devotion and humility of a true servant of God. The tale shows that one who wrongs the truly great finds no refuge wherever he runs, and that real greatness lives in humility.

Key lessons

  • Honouring those who have real power and wisdom is the surest protection one can have.
  • Once the anger of the great is roused, there is nowhere to run.
  • Humility is not fear; it is respect given with an understanding of another's strength, penance and learning.
  • Wealth and rank without good standing cannot stand before the anger of the great.
  • One who heeds good counsel prevents his own downfall.
