Explanation

Valluvar does not search for a grand comparison. He points to something tiny: the tip of a green blade of grass. We may think that even if trees and crops fail, grass will somehow sprout. He says even grass will not lift its head without rain. The simplest and sturdiest living thing waits for a single drop from the sky.

'Thalai kaanpu aridhu' refers to the sprouting grass raising its head over the soil. For the tip of a blade to pierce the earth is a small victory, and even that victory needs the help of rain. The grass the cow grazes, the grass that clothes the hillside, the grass that sprouts in a temple courtyard, are all children of the same drop.

The verse also shows the first link of a chain. Without grass there are no goats and cattle; without them there is no milk and no help for the plough. Losing grass is losing a whole way of life.

In many cities today, the ground is sealed under concrete and rainwater runs off instead of sinking in. Where there is no place for grass to rise, the drop the verse speaks of is wasted. Leaving a small patch of bare earth in one's yard is also a way of honouring this verse.

A story

Rama's Rainy Season on Mount Prasravana

From the Kishkindha Kanda of the Ramayana. After Vali's fall, when Sugriva was given the kingdom, the rainy season began. Since the search for Sita could not start in that season, Rama and Lakshmana stayed in a cave on a mountain called Prasravana. Valmiki writes a lovely scene there, with Rama speaking as he watches the rain.

Dark clouds filled the sky. Thunder rolled. Lightning scratched the heavens. The parched land drank the first rain. The scent of earth rose. In a few days the burnt ground put on a green blanket. Frogs sang, peacocks danced, and fresh grass sprang up and shone on the hillsides.

The epic says Rama spoke of these things to Lakshmana. In the sense of the passage, he said, "Look, Lakshmana, the sky gives its water to the world, fills the rivers and gives life to the grass." But the separation from Sita was in his heart. The beauty of the rain deepened his sorrow, and yet the renewal of nature gave him some hope: as dry land turns green again, sorrow too will one day ease.

When the rain stopped and the sky cleared, green grass stood knee-high outside the cave mouth and swayed in the wind. Rama looked at it and stood silent for a while. As the sky had not abandoned even the small blade of grass, perhaps he trusted that a good day would come for him too.

When the season ended, the monkey armies set out on the search. As a single blade of grass waits for a drop from the sky, Rama waited patiently for his time.
