Explanation

Charity and austerity are two of the highest virtues, one for the householder and one for the renunciant. The householder gives to others; the ascetic purifies the mind by disciplining the body. Valluvar ties both to rain. Without rain there is nothing to give, and those who practise austerity lose strength for lack of food.

Charity needs substance, and substance comes from the earth. To share one's own food in famine is no easy act; it is a very high virtue. But when the whole land is starving, most people struggle merely to save their own lives. Valluvar observes that giving would grow rare.

The same holds for ascetics. They may seem to have renounced food and body, yet they continue their austerity on food, alms and water given by householders. In a dry world there would be no one to help them either. In this way Valluvar joins both the way of the householder and the way of the renunciant to the rain.

The lesson for us is that virtue does not grow in isolation. It lives together with the environment and nature. Protecting nature is quietly the protection of virtue itself, and one who protects water sources guards both generosity and righteousness.

A story

King Rantideva Who Gave Everything

From the Bhagavata Purana. King Rantideva, born of the lunar line, gave away all his wealth to others and lived simply with his family. Days came when food was not easy to find. For forty-eight days he and his family went without even water.

On the morning of the forty-ninth day, a little ghee, payasam and water came to him. As the family was about to eat, a brahmin arrived at the door and asked for food. Rantideva gladly gave to him. The guest ate, blessed them and left. When they sat to share what remained, a poor man came begging, and they shared with him. Then a man came with his dogs; what was left they gave to him. At last one came asking for water to drink.

Rantideva said, "I want neither great powers nor liberation. I wish only to take on the suffering of all beings so that they may live free of pain. Giving this water to a man dying of thirst keeps my own life alive." He gave away even that water.

At that moment Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva appeared before him. Tradition says they had come in disguise to test him. Rantideva bowed. Non-attachment was the reward of the man who gave without attachment.

This story shows the reverse of what Valluvar warns: 'charity and austerity will not abide'. When famine and hunger are at their height, for charity to still remain takes a rare heart such as Rantideva's.
