Explanation

When rain falls short, the first to suffer is the farmer. But Valluvar does not describe the farmer's suffering directly. He tells us what the farmer will not do: pick up the plough. The meaning is deep. Ploughing is an act of faith, preparing the land in the hope of rain. When that hope breaks, the farmer's hand will not go to the plough.

The phrase 'puyal ennum vaari' speaks of the rain-cloud as wealth or income. The word 'vaari' can mean income and also the sea; here it means the bounty the cloud gives. For the farmer, rain is the starting point of the year's earnings. If it falls short, effort in the field falls with it.

One subtle point is the chain of consequence. If ploughing stops, food stops, and when food stops the whole society stops. All other trades depend, on one day or another, on the farmer. Valluvar will later give an entire chapter to farming and declare that only those who live by the plough truly live.

Many farmers today, when the rains fail, sink into debt and leave their land. People in cities who understand their distress, who pay a fair price for their produce, and who protect lakes and tanks, are giving this verse the respect it deserves.

A story

The Aadi Season and the Farmer on the Kaveri Bank

In a small village on the Kaveri's bank lived a farmer named Velappan. When the month of Aadi began, his house filled with bustle. 'Aadip pattam thedi vidhai', the village saying goes: look for the Aadi season and sow. It is believed that seeds sown in Aadi give a good harvest. But that year Aadi began and the sky stayed empty.

The day of Aadi Perukku arrived. On that day, women tie fresh yellow threads on the riverbank, offer black beads and bangles, and worship mother Kaveri. That year very little water flowed in the river. Velappan stood hesitating, his plough on his shoulder. "What is the use of ploughing in a year the rain does not come?" he asked his wife Amudha. She said nothing.

Just then the village elder Subbiah came by. "Velappa, you hold a plough in your hand. If you put it down, the whole village will do the same. If you stop ploughing today, tomorrow there will be no rice in any house," he said. There was no scolding in his words, only warmth.

That day Velappan ploughed a little of his land and prayed to the Kaveri. The next week rain that had fallen on the western hills came down the river in flood. The land he had ploughed was the first to drink and be ready for seed. Many others had to prepare their fields late.

From then on the village respected Velappan as 'the man who takes up the plough in Aadi with faith'.
