Explanation

'Vizhumam' is affliction; 'thudaiththavar' is the one who wiped it away. If someone removes our affliction, we shall remember his friendship through seven births, says Valluvar. 'Ezhumai' is a customary phrase that uses the number seven to mean always.

Seven births in Indian thought is a phrase for the length of the chain of births. It means gratitude for help in one birth must be offered in the next as well. The exaggeration shows the depth of gratitude.

The word 'thangan' is special. The affliction was one that struck them themselves. When someone removes a sorrow we ourselves suffered, as long as the pain is remembered, so is the one who removed it.

This continues the previous verse. In 106 he said do not abandon those who stood by you in affliction. Here he stresses remembering them birth after birth. Gratitude is not a matter of a day or of a single life.

Commentators link the verse with the doctrine of rebirth. Others take it as a figure for the whole of life without literally meaning rebirth. Both reach the same idea: gratitude is never forgotten.

In the Hindu tradition, Sugriva's debt to Rama is an example. Rama killed Vali and restored kingdom and wife to Sugriva. Sugriva should have remembered Rama always. But he forgot for a while, and that is the human nature Valmiki shows.

Forgetting gratitude happens to all of us. Once a great trouble passes, the mind tries to forget who removed it. This verse is a reminder against that. We can set aside a moment each day to think of one who gave us a hand.

A story

Sugriva Forgets and Repents

Sugriva's story comes in the Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Driven out of his kingdom by his brother Vali, robbed of his wife, Sugriva lived in fear on a hill. Through Hanuman he met Rama. Rama made friendship with him with fire as witness, killed Vali, and restored to him the kingdom and his wife.

His whole great affliction ended that day. It was Rama who ended it. Sugriva had promised to find Sita for Rama. Rama stayed on Mount Prasravana until the rains were over.

But Sugriva, now king, sank in palace pleasures. The rains ended and autumn came. He forgot his promise. Rama waited in sorrow.

Hanuman reminded Sugriva of his duty. At the same time Rama sent Lakshmana. Lakshmana came to Kishkindha in anger and twanged his bowstring. Sugriva trembled. Tara spoke gently to Lakshmana and calmed his rage.

The Kanda says Sugriva spoke humbly to Lakshmana, to the effect that he had been at fault in forgetting his duty to Rama and begged pardon. He at once sent the vanaras to search in all four directions.

This story shows both sides of verse 107. The friendship of one who wiped away our affliction should be remembered. But humans forget easily. Though Sugriva forgot, he mended when reminded. That is his credit.

Friends like Hanuman remind us of our gratitude. In our lives it is good to listen to such voices and set ourselves right.

Rama's waiting without showing anger is a sign of his patience too. It is natural to expect thanks from those we helped; but if they forget we should be able to remind and forgive them.

To reflect on

Which friend wiped away my trouble, and have I let their memory fade in my comfort?
