Explanation

Cross the wave-tossed sea, if need be, to seek wealth, says Avvaiyar. There is no limit to effort. The Tamil merchants of old crossed the seas to trade and made the land prosperous.

Yet the same Avvaiyar says in many places that wealth does not last and that its use lies in giving. Seek it with effort; use it without clinging.

Life of Pattinathar (Tamil Shaiva tradition)

The Needle Without an Eye

From the life of Pattinathar. In Kaveripoompattinam lived a great merchant named Thiruvenkadar, who grew very rich trading across the seas. Childless, he raised a boy named Marudhavanan, who had come to him by divine grace.

When Marudhavanan grew up, he went on a sea voyage and came back with a ship full of dried cow-dung cakes and bran. When his angry father broke them open, he found gold inside. But the son had vanished. In the box he left behind were a needle with a broken eye and a palm leaf that read: 'Even a needle without an eye will not go with you on your final journey.'

Realising this, Thiruvenkadar renounced everything that very day and became the sage Pattinathar. The wealth he had gathered across the seas became his doorway to true wisdom.

To reflect on

Of all you work to gather, what will go with you on the final journey?
