Explanation

The poet begins by speaking of his own heart. It is 'kanakal', a heavy stone. No seed sprouts on stone, and no experience of God flowers in a hard heart. Before he can sing a book called Anubhuti, 'experience', that heart must soften and melt, and for that he needs the grace of Ganesha.

'Panchakkara aanai', the elephant with five hands, is a lovely phrase. Ganesha has four arms, and his trunk works as a fifth hand, so he is called Ainkaran, the five-handed one. To make the garland for the younger brother worthy, the poet bows first to the elder.

Notice also that he says 'panivaam', 'let us bow', not 'I bow'. The singer and every reader bow together. From the first verse the book draws us in, not as an audience but as fellow seekers whose hearts also need to melt.

Kanda Puranam, the marriage of Valli

The Elephant Who Brought Valli Home

From the Kanda Puranam. Murugan wished to marry Valli, who had grown up among the hill hunters. He came to the millet field she guarded in the form of an old ascetic. Valli treated the old man with respect, but she would not let him come near her.

Then Murugan remembered his elder brother. At once Ganesha appeared as a huge wild elephant, trumpeting as it charged out of the forest. Trembling with fear, Valli ran and clung to the very old man she had been keeping at a distance. 'Send the elephant away,' she cried, 'and I will do whatever you wish.' When the elephant withdrew, the old man stood before her in his true form as Murugan.

It was the elder brother's help that brought about the younger brother's marriage. So it is fitting that books in praise of Murugan begin by bowing to Ganesha.
