Meaning

The Veda that the deer-like Goddess of the sixty-four arts makes known enters the seeking mind again and again and cuts away its darkness. It ripens and wells up as the joy with which every searching scholar comes to see the meaning. It opens out in full until the heart is clear.

Explanation

This verse describes in three steps how the Veda works. First it enters the mind 'again and again' and cuts away the darkness. Hearing once is not enough; one must hear, reflect and let it sink in, over and over.

Second, it comes 'ripening and welling up as joy'. At the moment the meaning dawns, a gladness is born, like fruit ripening or a spring rising. Third, 'the heart becomes clear and opens out completely', as a lotus opens. The tradition's three steps of hearing, reflecting and clear seeing are all here.

Mundaka Upanishad

What Is It That, Once Known, Makes All Known?

From the Mundaka Upanishad. Shaunaka, a great householder, went in the proper way to the sage Angiras with fuel-sticks in his hand, bowed and asked: 'Revered sir, what is it which, once known, makes all this known?'

Angiras replied: 'There are two kinds of knowledge to be known, the higher and the lower. The Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Vedas, phonetics, ritual, grammar, etymology, metre and astronomy are the lower knowledge. The higher is that by which the Imperishable is known.'

Then he gave an image: 'As a spider sends out its thread and draws it back, as plants spring from the earth, so this world comes forth from the Imperishable.' Both levels of the learning the Goddess gives are here: the arts, and the wisdom beyond them. The state Kambar describes, 'the heart grows clear and opens out completely', is that higher knowledge.

சிந்தனைக்கு

ஒரு கருத்து உங்களுக்குத் திடீரென்று "புரிந்த" கணத்தை நினைவுகூர முடியுமா? அதற்கு முன் எத்தனை முறை அதைக் கேட்டிருந்தீர்கள்?

To reflect on

Can you recall a moment when something suddenly made sense? How many times had you heard it before that?
