Meaning

Victory, Soma! Victory, Soma! Victory, Lord Soma! Victory, victory!

You made the gracious Indra the leader of the gods; you burned up the maya of the mighty asuras; you poured the heavenly moonlight of bliss on the wide world; you took away my sorrow and made my heart shine. You protect lovers lost in longing on earth; you string the hearts of the two together so that they may be saved. When a host of falsehoods comes, casting darkness like a gathering storm, you destroy it with your smile.

Explanation

Soma is one of the chief deities of the Rig Veda; the entire ninth mandala is devoted to him. The Soma juice is the nectar that gives the gods bliss and strength; drinking it, Indra conquered Vritra - hence 'you made Indra leader, you burned the maya of the asuras'. In later tradition Soma is also praised as the Moon; 'you poured the heavenly moonlight of bliss' joins both meanings.

In Sri Aurobindo's spiritual interpretation of the Veda, made at Puducherry, Soma is 'the god of Ananda', divine delight. Bharathiyar was close to him there, and this song is shaped by that vision. That the Moon protects lovers and unites two hearts is a theme of Tamil poetry.

To reflect on

Soma destroys the host of falsehoods 'with a smile' - not with anger. How can joy help us face falsehood?
