Meaning

You who talk only falsehood, saying 'we know him', the Mountain whom Vishnu could not know and four-faced Brahma could not see! You deceiver with a mouth sweet as honey flowing with milk, open your door! We sing of the beauty of the one whom earth and heaven and all else cannot know, of his gentle way of taking us and clearing our faults, and we cry out 'Siva! Siva!', and still you do not wake, you do not wake, see! Girl with hair fragrant with cardamom, is this how you are? O our maiden!

Explanation

'The Mountain whom Vishnu could not know and Brahma could not see' is the story of Thiruvannamalai. When Brahma and Vishnu quarrelled over who was greater, Siva stood as a column of light whose top and base no one could find. Vishnu as a boar dug for its base and failed; Brahma as a swan flew for its top and failed. That light is Annamalai, and since Thiruvembavai was sung there, the reference fits.

To say 'we know him' of one the great gods could not know is false. Yet the unknowable one takes us and cares for us, and singing of that is all we can do.

The Column of Fire at Annamalai

Once Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the protector, argued over which of them was greater. As the argument turned into a fight, a vast column of fire rose between them, its base and its top beyond sight. A voice said, 'Whoever first finds its base or its top is the greater.'

Vishnu became a boar and dug down through the earth, deeper and deeper, searching for ages, and never found the base. Brahma became a swan and flew up and up, and never found the top. On the way he met a thazhai flower drifting down and asked it to bear witness that he had reached the summit. Vishnu admitted defeat and bowed; Brahma lied. Then Siva appeared from the heart of the column. He declared that Brahma would have no temples for his lie and that the thazhai flower would not be offered to him, and he received the humble Vishnu with grace.

That fire later cooled into a mountain, Annamalai, and in its memory a great flame is lit on the summit every Karthigai Deepam. Manikkavasagar was staying at the foot of that mountain when, in the Margazhi dawn, he heard girls waking one another and singing on their way to bathe. In their voices he heard devotees waking each other to the love of God, and he sang Thiruvembavai. That is why the verses speak of 'the Mountain whom Vishnu could not know and Brahma could not see' and of 'the lotus feet of the Lord of Annamalai'.
