Meaning

There is an old saying, 'the child in your arms is under your protection', and our fear makes us say it anew. So, our Lord, we tell you this; listen: let our breasts never rest against the shoulders of any who are not your lovers; let our hands do no work that is not for you; night and day let our eyes see nothing else. Our King, if you grant us this, what does it matter to us where the sun rises? O our maiden!

Explanation

This is the high point of Thiruvembavai. The girls keep a vow for good husbands, but what they ask is: let us never join anyone who is not your devotee; let our hands do only your work; let our eyes see only you. Body, hands and eyes, all for the Lord.

The last line is lovely: if we have this, what does it matter whether the sun rises in the east or the west? Let the world turn upside down; one who rests in the Lord is not shaken by the world's changes.

The Column of Fire at Annamalai

Once Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the protector, argued over which of them was greater. As the argument turned into a fight, a vast column of fire rose between them, its base and its top beyond sight. A voice said, 'Whoever first finds its base or its top is the greater.'

Vishnu became a boar and dug down through the earth, deeper and deeper, searching for ages, and never found the base. Brahma became a swan and flew up and up, and never found the top. On the way he met a thazhai flower drifting down and asked it to bear witness that he had reached the summit. Vishnu admitted defeat and bowed; Brahma lied. Then Siva appeared from the heart of the column. He declared that Brahma would have no temples for his lie and that the thazhai flower would not be offered to him, and he received the humble Vishnu with grace.

That fire later cooled into a mountain, Annamalai, and in its memory a great flame is lit on the summit every Karthigai Deepam. Manikkavasagar was staying at the foot of that mountain when, in the Margazhi dawn, he heard girls waking one another and singing on their way to bathe. In their voices he heard devotees waking each other to the love of God, and he sang Thiruvembavai. That is why the verses speak of 'the Mountain whom Vishnu could not know and Brahma could not see' and of 'the lotus feet of the Lord of Annamalai'.
