Explanation

Four punishments: Brahma's fifth head cut off, Kama burned by the eye in the forehead, the demon Andhaka impaled on the trident, the moon rubbed underfoot. The questioner sees cruelty in them.

The answer: these punishments were for the gods' own good. Saiva Siddhanta speaks of marakkarunai, stern grace. As a mother corrects her child, the Lord's punishment is a form of love. After Kama was burned, at his wife Rati's plea he was given life again without a body; even in punishment there is compassion.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam (Kadavul Mamunivar), the chapter on the debate with the Buddhists; temple tradition of Thillai

The Day the Mute Princess Spoke

While Manikkavasagar was living at Thillai, a Buddhist teacher came from Lanka with his disciples and challenged the Saivas to debate, declaring that there was no god called Siva and that the temple should become a Buddhist monastery. The king of Lanka came too, with his daughter, who had been mute from birth. The priests of Thillai were troubled. That night the Lord appeared in their dreams and said, 'Call the man from Thiruvathavur.'

The debate began before the Chola king. The Buddhist teacher mocked the Saiva faith while Manikkavasagar listened quietly. Then he turned to the king of Lanka and asked, 'Your daughter cannot speak. If she answers my questions, will you accept the truth of the Saiva way?' The king agreed.

Manikkavasagar asked question after question about the Lord's strange forms: 'He smears on white ash, he wears hissing serpents; who is he?' The princess, who had never spoken a word, answered in clear Tamil. Tradition says their dialogue of question and answer is the Thiruchazhal. Everyone in the hall was astonished. The Buddhist scholars who had been arguing fell mute themselves, and later, by Manikkavasagar's grace, their speech was restored. The king of Lanka and the Buddhist teacher embraced the Saiva way. This hymn of teasing questions and compassionate answers stands as a witness that truth is revealed not by argument but by grace.
