Meaning

Green parrot of the grove, tell me the flag that shines in beauty above the Lord of Perunthurai of pure waters. It is the flawless bull banner, which flies high and displays its splendour so that his foes are struck with alarm.

Explanation

The Lord's flag bears the bull. Tradition says the bull is the form of dharma. Nandi is honoured as the Lord's first devotee and guardian, and it is Nandi who is raised on the temple flagstaff at every festival.

At the sight of that flag, foes are alarmed and devotees rejoice. Where dharma flies high, adharma cannot stand.

Across these ten verses Manikkavasagar has taken the insignia of an earthly king and turned each into an inner experience: the name is the chanting of his name, the river is bliss, the mountain is liberation, the weapon is the removal of impurity, the drum is sacred sound, the garland is love, and the flag is dharma. The Lord is king, and his kingdom is within the heart.

Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam (Paranjothi Munivar), Madurai Kandam: the marriage of Thadathagai and the crowning of Sundara Pandiyan

When the Lord Ruled as the Pandya King

King Malayadhvaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamalai performed a sacrifice for a child. From the sacred fire rose a three-year-old girl, Thadathagai, who was Uma herself. She grew up, was crowned queen of the Pandya land and conquered every direction. When she reached Kailasa and saw the Lord, she recognised her bridegroom.

The Lord came to Madurai as Sundaresvara and married Thadathagai. Then, under the name Sundara Pandiyan, he himself was crowned king of the Pandya land. Wearing the neem garland, raising the fish banner and holding the sceptre of justice, he protected the people. All sixty-four sacred plays told in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam took place in this Madurai.

That is why Manikkavasagar calls the Lord, with such fondness, 'the one of the southern Pandya land'. When he asks about the ten insignia of a king in Thiruthasangam, he is not singing of an imaginary ruler. He sings of the King who truly ruled the Pandya country, and who now rules the hearts of his devotees.
