Meaning

Wondrous One! Lord of heaven who drank the poison of the heaving sea! Our nectar with the sapphire throat! I, a dog, do not even think of you. Even though I am a madman who does not bow at your feet saying 'Namasivaya', show me the great path. Lord with the crescent moon shining in your matted hair! Is it fitting for you that I should stand far off and cry out? Siva who dwells at Perunthurai!

Explanation

Namasivaya, the five-syllable mantra, is the heart of Saivism; the Sivapuranam opens with 'Namasivaya vazhga'. Yet here Manikkavasagar calls himself one who does not even say it. Though unworthy, he prays, show me the great path.

'Is it fitting that I stand far off and cry?' is a child's complaint. Is it right for a mother to stand at a distance while her child weeps? These are words spoken with loving familiarity. A special mark of Tamil devotion is that the devotee may even scold the Lord, with the right that love gives.

The names 'blue-throated' and 'wearer of the crescent' recall his compassion. He drank poison to save the world and wore the waning moon on his head to protect it. He will not leave a devotee crying far away.

The Foot That Kicked Death Away from Markandeya

The sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati prayed to Siva for a child. The Lord asked them, 'Do you want a dull son who will live a hundred years, or a wise one who will live only sixteen?' They chose the wise one, and so Markandeya was born.

From childhood Markandeya loved Siva deeply. When he turned sixteen he was worshipping the linga at Thirukkadavur. Yama, the god of death, came and threw his noose. Markandeya clung tightly to the linga, and the noose fell over the linga as well. Then the Lord burst forth from the linga and struck Yama down with his left foot. Markandeya received the boon of remaining sixteen forever. At Thirukkadavur the Lord is still worshipped as Kalasamhara Murti, the destroyer of Death.

In Sethilappathu, Manikkavasagar praises this foot as 'the lovely foot that took the life of Death'. Even while he cries 'I have not yet died', it is this foot that conquered death that he holds on to. For one who clings to the Lord's feet, death is not the end. Life with the Lord is the true deathless state.

To reflect on

Who can you be cross with because you are sure of their love? What is that bond made of?
