Meaning

With Brahma on the lotus, Vishnu on the surging ocean, and Indra and the rest all standing by, you did not clear away my faults, show me your feet with their ringing anklets, and add me to your servants, saying 'mark this one as mine'. I sat not knowing what to do, my Medicine! Is it sweet to you that your servant suffers? Siva who dwells at Perunthurai, ringed by fields full of cool water!

Explanation

When the Lord vanished with his devotees at Perunthurai, he did not take Manikkavasagar with him. The Thiruvathavurar Puranam says he told him to come to Thillai and then left. The pain of that moment echoes here: 'you did not add me to your servants!'

'Is it sweet to you that your servant suffers?' is humanity's old question: why does God allow suffering? Saiva Siddhanta's answer is that this is the work of the Lord's concealing power, tirodhana sakti. Grace stays hidden until the impurities ripen, and that too is compassion.

That is why, in the same line, he calls the Lord 'my Medicine'. Even bitter medicine is given to cure.

The Foot That Kicked Death Away from Markandeya

The sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati prayed to Siva for a child. The Lord asked them, 'Do you want a dull son who will live a hundred years, or a wise one who will live only sixteen?' They chose the wise one, and so Markandeya was born.

From childhood Markandeya loved Siva deeply. When he turned sixteen he was worshipping the linga at Thirukkadavur. Yama, the god of death, came and threw his noose. Markandeya clung tightly to the linga, and the noose fell over the linga as well. Then the Lord burst forth from the linga and struck Yama down with his left foot. Markandeya received the boon of remaining sixteen forever. At Thirukkadavur the Lord is still worshipped as Kalasamhara Murti, the destroyer of Death.

In Sethilappathu, Manikkavasagar praises this foot as 'the lovely foot that took the life of Death'. Even while he cries 'I have not yet died', it is this foot that conquered death that he holds on to. For one who clings to the Lord's feet, death is not the end. Life with the Lord is the true deathless state.
