Kandha Puranam; Siva Mahapurana; temple tradition of Thirukkadavur; Thevaram (Appar, Sambandar)The Foot That Kicked Death Away from Markandeya
The sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati prayed to Siva for a child. The Lord asked them, 'Do you want a dull son who will live a hundred years, or a wise one who will live only sixteen?' They chose the wise one, and so Markandeya was born.
From childhood Markandeya loved Siva deeply. When he turned sixteen he was worshipping the linga at Thirukkadavur. Yama, the god of death, came and threw his noose. Markandeya clung tightly to the linga, and the noose fell over the linga as well. Then the Lord burst forth from the linga and struck Yama down with his left foot. Markandeya received the boon of remaining sixteen forever. At Thirukkadavur the Lord is still worshipped as Kalasamhara Murti, the destroyer of Death.
In Sethilappathu, Manikkavasagar praises this foot as 'the lovely foot that took the life of Death'. Even while he cries 'I have not yet died', it is this foot that conquered death that he holds on to. For one who clings to the Lord's feet, death is not the end. Life with the Lord is the true deathless state.
