Foremost disciple of Meykandar

Arulnandi Sivachariyar

The Shaiva Siddhanta teacher who gave us the Sivagnana Siddhiyar and Irupa Irupathu

Share

Arulnandi Sivachariyar was an Adi Shaiva of Thiruthuraiyur, near Thiruvennainallur. He had mastered all the Agamas and was honoured as \"Sakalagama Panditar\". He was the family guru of Meykandar's household, and later became the boy's disciple. Tradition says that when he asked \"What is anavam?\", Meykandar simply pointed at him, and his pride fell away.

He is the foremost of Meykandar's forty-nine disciples. To expound his guru's Sivagnana Bodham he wrote the Sivagnana Siddhiyar in two parts, Parapakkam and Supakkam; it is the largest of the Meykanda Sastras. In Irupa Irupathu he sang of the doubts he laid before his guru and the clarity he received. His disciple was Maraignana Sambandar, whose disciple was Umapathi Sivacharya. So Meykandar, Arulnandiyar, Maraignana Sambandar and Umapathi Sivam are honoured together as the four \"Santhana Kuravar\", the teachers of the lineage.

The Meykanda Sastras

The Shaiva Siddhanta lineage; the life of Meykandar

The Answer Found in the Thevaram

Meykandar's father, Achyuta Kalappalar, grieved for many years that he had no child. He came to his family guru, Arulnandiyar, with his sorrow. Arulnandiyar prayed to the Lord and slipped a thread into the palm-leaf bundle of the Thirumurai. It fell on the hymn Thirugnanasambandar had sung at Thiruvenkadu, which promised good children to those who bathe in the three sacred tanks there and worship.

Achyuta Kalappalar and his wife went to Thiruvenkadu and worshipped, and a son, Swetavana Perumal, was born to them. That child later became Meykandar.

The Lord's play is full of wonder: the family guru who showed the way to the child's birth later fell at that child's feet and became his disciple. Meykandar took into his care, through wisdom, the elder who had helped bring him into the world. Neither age nor learning decides who is guru and who is disciple; grace decides.
