A disciple of Meykandar

Manavasagam Kadandar

The sage of Thiruvathigai who gave us Unmai Vilakkam

Share

Manavasagam Kadandar came from Thiruvathigai on the banks of the Gedilam river and was a direct disciple of Meykandar. His name means \"one who has gone beyond mind and speech\": one who has realised the Lord, who is beyond word and thought. The verse of praise that opens Unmai Vilakkam names him \"Manavasagam Kadandan, who dwells at the great Athigai\".

His Unmai Vilakkam is the sixth of the Meykanda Sastras. In fifty-four simple venbas it sets out the thirty-six tattvas, anavam, karma, the soul, Shiva and liberation. Its special gift is its philosophical reading of the Ananda Tandava of Nataraja at Thillai and of the five letters \"Namasivaya\". It is one of the first books read by those who begin to study Shaiva Siddhanta.

A Meykanda Sastra

Periya Puranam of Sekkizhar, the life of Thirunavukkarasar

Appar Comes Home at Thiruvathigai

Thiruvathigai, Manavasagam Kadandar's town, is the place of one of the greatest events in Shaiva history. A young man named Marulneekkiyar, born into a Shaiva family, joined the Jain faith, took the name Dharmasena, and became a great Jain leader at Pataliputra. His elder sister Thilakavathiyar lived at the Veerattanam temple of Thiruvathigai and prayed every day that her brother would return to the path of Shiva.

One day Dharmasena was struck by a terrible pain in the stomach. The mantras and medicines of the Jains did nothing for it. Unable to bear the pain, he came running to Thiruvathigai and fell at his sister's feet. Thilakavathiyar put holy ash on him and led him to the shrine of Veerattaneswarar.

There he sang his first Thevaram hymn, "Kootraayinavaaru vilakkagileer". When he finished, the pain was gone. Tradition says the Lord gave him the name Navukkarasar, "king of speech". He is Appar.

It is fitting that the sage who sang, in Unmai Vilakkam, of the Lord beyond mind and speech lived in the same town where the king of speech was born anew.
