Meaning

So that my strong karma of the past might leave me, my Father with three eyes, hard for anyone to know yet easy for his devotees, my Mother who wears the young crescent moon in his coiled hair that outshines gold, ruled me and joined me with his devotees. What a wonder we have seen!

Explanation

In this verse the Lord is called first 'my Father' and at the end 'my Mother'. The Lord in whom Siva and Sakti are one is both mother and father. In Pidithapathu Manikkavasagar will call him this way again: 'Mother, Father!'

'Hard for anyone to know, yet easy for his devotees' is the truth that rings through the whole Thiruvasagam. He is hard to find for those who search, easy for those who love.

The story of the young crescent: cursed by Daksha to waste away, the Moon took refuge in the Lord, who placed him on his head and saved him. It is a compassion that sets even the one who is fading on its head.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Karaikkal Ammaiyar; her Arputha Thiruvandhadhi and Thiruvalangadu hymns

Karaikkal Ammaiyar, Who Saw the Dance at Thiruvalangadu

Punithavathiyar of Karaikkal loved the devotees of Siva deeply. One day her husband sent home two mangoes, and she gave one to a hungry devotee of Siva who came to the door. When her husband came to eat and asked for the second mango, she prayed to the Lord, and a mango appeared in her hand. Struck by its wondrous taste, her husband asked its secret, and she told him what had happened. At his request she prayed for another, and that too came. Frightened by the wonder, her husband came to regard her as divine and left her.

Punithavathiyar prayed to the Lord, 'I do not want this beautiful body. Give me the form of a ghoul.' She became a figure of bones and went to Kailasa walking on her head. The Lord called her 'Mother'. She asked to watch his dance forever from beneath his feet, and tradition says she still watches and sings the dance at Thiruvalangadu. Her poem is called the Arputha Thiruvandhadhi, the hymn of wonder.

In Athisayappathu, Manikkavasagar sings of the Lord 'who danced at night holding fire' in the cremation ground, and accepts that the world calls him mad. Karaikkal Ammaiyar too took a form the world feared in order to see that dance. Those the world looked on with wonder and fear, the Lord called 'Mother' and kept close to himself. That is the wonder.
