Explanation

This verse recalls the Lord's heroic deeds: making Meru his bow to burn the three cities, and kicking Yama to save Markandeya. But these are not just tales of valour. Both were done to protect devotees: the three cities to protect the gods, the kick at Death to protect a boy.

The name Vikirta speaks of the Lord's strangeness. He dances in the cremation ground and begs for alms, yet he is the Lord of the worlds. He fits no definition. And of one so mighty, the devotee asks something very small: one word, 'what is it?'

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Poosalar Nayanar

Poosalar, Who Built a Temple in His Mind

Poosalar of Thiruninravur was a poor brahmin who longed with all his heart to build a temple for the Lord. But he had no money. So he began to build the temple inside his own mind. From laying the foundation stone to raising the walls, the tower over the shrine, the gateway, the well and the halls, he set every stone in place with his mind over many years. At last he fixed an auspicious day for its consecration.

At the same time, in Kanchi, the Pallava king had built a great temple of stone and arranged to consecrate it on that very day. The night before, the Lord appeared in the king's dream and said, 'Tomorrow I am going to take my place in the temple Poosalar has built at Thiruninravur. Hold your consecration on another day.' Astonished, the king went to Thiruninravur to look for that temple, but found no temple in the town. When he found Poosalar and asked him, Poosalar said, 'I built it in my mind.' The king bowed at his feet.

In the last verse of Arutpathu, Manikkavasagar calls the unceasing remembrance of the Lord a 'rare penance', and says the way to Kailasa lies in the very middle of the sea of births. Poosalar's story proves it. Without wealth or land, a mind that remembers with love is the temple the Lord most gladly enters.
