Meaning

Many great sages did penance for endless ages, despised even their own limbs in their longing to see you, and wasted away. Yet you took me, a sinner, into your service. I cannot bring myself to destroy this hut of filth, my body. O gem, I lack even the love that is restless to see you. My Lord, with what shall I rise?

Explanation

That a sinner receives what sages of long penance did not is the riddle of grace. The Siva Purana tells of sages like Dadhichi and Bhrigu who practised austerities for ages. Passing them by, the Lord took a king's minister.

Yet even after grace the question remains: 'with what shall I rise?' Purifying the experience means rising and walking with the grace received, and the poet hesitates, feeling he lacks the love it needs.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.
