Meaning

Those who reached your flower-feet, bright as lightning, have crossed beyond this wide world. All the gods stand praising you with flowers like gold. I am the lowest, with a mind like stone, cast aside and fallen into a sea of sorrow. Tell me, then, how one like me may now be joined to you.

Explanation

Tradition says Ananda Maalai was sung at Thillai. It has seven verses. Its inner title is 'Sivanubhava Viruppam', longing for the bliss of experiencing Siva. Though it is called the 'Garland of Bliss', the verses are full of longing. It is the longing for bliss that is strung here into a garland.

The first two lines speak of others: devotees have crossed the world, gods stand praising. The last two speak of 'I': a mind of stone, a sea of sorrow. That contrast creates the longing. Yet he does not turn away; he asks the Lord himself, 'Tell me the way to be joined to you.'

Sthala Purana of Thiruchirappalli; tradition of the Thayumanavar temple; Thevaram hymns on Thiruchirappalli (Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar)

Thayumanavar, the Lord Who Became a Mother

In Thiruchirappalli, on the banks of the Kaveri, lived a woman named Rathnavathi who deeply loved the Lord on the hill. She was expecting a child. As the time drew near, her mother, who lived on the far bank of the Kaveri, promised to come and help her.

But that day a great flood came down the Kaveri. Her mother could not cross and stood helpless on the other bank. Here, Rathnavathi was in the pains of labour, with no one to help her. In tears she called on the Lord of the hill: 'My mother cannot come. You be my mother.'

Soon there was a knock at the door. Someone in her mother's form came in, comforted her lovingly, helped her through the birth and placed the baby in her arms. For many days this 'mother' stayed and did everything a mother does for her daughter.

When the flood went down, the real mother came running. Everyone was astonished to see two mothers in the same house. Then the one who had come first vanished and appeared as the Lord on the hill. From that day he has been called Thayumanavar, 'the one who became a mother as well'.

In Ananda Maalai Manikkavasagar sings, 'You who give the breast as a mother would' and 'Calling "Mother!", I came to your feet.' The one who came as a mother to a woman who called him 'Mother' will never abandon the devotee who asks, 'Am I alone not wanted?'
