Meaning

You who give the breast as a mother would: if you stop giving, will I, a dog, waste away like a starving child? O Perfect One, give your grace now at last. Calling 'Mother!', I came to your feet. Is there no compassion for me in you? You took me, a dog, as your servant and kept me with you. Am I alone now not wanted?

Explanation

'Savalai' is a tender Tamil word for a child grown thin for want of its mother's milk. The Lord's grace is like a mother's milk; when it stops, the soul withers. Manikkavasagar sees the Lord as mother throughout the Thiruvasagam; in Pidiththa Paththu he sang of one 'more tender than a mother who feeds her child at the right time.'

The last line touches the heart: the other devotees have joined you; 'am I alone not wanted?' It is the question of a child who feels left behind.

Sthala Purana of Thiruchirappalli; tradition of the Thayumanavar temple; Thevaram hymns on Thiruchirappalli (Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar)

Thayumanavar, the Lord Who Became a Mother

In Thiruchirappalli, on the banks of the Kaveri, lived a woman named Rathnavathi who deeply loved the Lord on the hill. She was expecting a child. As the time drew near, her mother, who lived on the far bank of the Kaveri, promised to come and help her.

But that day a great flood came down the Kaveri. Her mother could not cross and stood helpless on the other bank. Here, Rathnavathi was in the pains of labour, with no one to help her. In tears she called on the Lord of the hill: 'My mother cannot come. You be my mother.'

Soon there was a knock at the door. Someone in her mother's form came in, comforted her lovingly, helped her through the birth and placed the baby in her arms. For many days this 'mother' stayed and did everything a mother does for her daughter.

When the flood went down, the real mother came running. Everyone was astonished to see two mothers in the same house. Then the one who had come first vanished and appeared as the Lord on the hill. From that day he has been called Thayumanavar, 'the one who became a mother as well'.

In Ananda Maalai Manikkavasagar sings, 'You who give the breast as a mother would' and 'Calling "Mother!", I came to your feet.' The one who came as a mother to a woman who called him 'Mother' will never abandon the devotee who asks, 'Am I alone not wanted?'

Who has loved you like a mother? Have you thanked them?
