ஏற்றகைம் மாற்றாமை என்னானும் தாம்வரையாதுஆற்றாதார்க் கீவதாம் ஆண்கடன் - ஆற்றின்மலிகடல் தண்சேர்ப்ப மாறீவார்க் கீதல்பொலிகடன் என்னும் பெயர்த்து.

பொருள்
ஏந்திய கையைத் திருப்பி அனுப்பாமல், எதையும் விலக்காமல், இயலாதவர்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பதே ஆண்மைக்குரிய கடமை. நீர்வளம் மிக்க கடலின் குளிர்ந்த கரையுடைய தலைவனே! திருப்பித் தரக்கூடியவர்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பது 'பொலிகடன்' (வட்டிக்குக் கொடுக்கும் கடன்) என்னும் பெயரையே பெறும்.
Meaning
Never to turn back an outstretched hand, holding nothing back, and to give to those who cannot repay: that is a man's true duty. O lord of the cool shore of the brimming sea, giving to those who will give back is called by another name: a loan that earns interest.

Explanation
The verse draws the line between a gift and a loan. Giving in expectation of return is trade.
Karna refused no one who asked him, and never asked whether they could repay.
