Meaning

However many fruits ripen on it, close at hand, the bat will not come near the rough-barked wood-apple tree. In the same way, though they live right beside us, no one even thinks of the wealth of the mean as something that could help them.

Explanation

A bat cannot crack the hard shell of the wood-apple, so the fruit is useless to it, however near.

The miser's wealth is the same: close by, yet of use to no one.

The Bhagavata Purana, Book 11

The Miser of Avanti

From the Bhagavata Purana. In Avanti lived a rich brahmin who hoarded every coin. He gave nothing to his family, to guests or to the gods, and he did not even enjoy his wealth himself. His relatives grew to hate him.

One by one, kinsmen, thieves, fate and the king took everything he had. Left with nothing, he finally saw what his wealth had been: a source of fifteen evils, from greed and pride to fear and enmity, and of no good to anyone. He took up the life of a wandering monk, and when people insulted and beat him, he sang the Bhikshu Gita: "No one else is the cause of my joy or sorrow; it is my own mind." Wealth that does no good to anyone is the heaviest of burdens.

To reflect on

Wealth that sits close and helps no one.
