பொருள்
கற்று அறிந்த நாவினார், தம் சொல் சோர்ந்துவிடுமோ என்று அஞ்சி அதிகம் பேசார். மற்றவர்களோ ஆவார் பகர்வார். பனையின்மேல் வற்றிய ஓலை கலகலக்கும்; பச்சோலைக்கு எஞ்ஞான்றும் ஒலி இல்லை.
Meaning
Those whose tongues learning has trained do not talk much, for they fear their own slip. The others, who are nothing, say whatever comes. The dry leaf on the palm rattles; the green leaf has no rattle at any time.

பாடலின் படம் ஈரத்தைப் பற்றியது. பனையின் பச்சோலையில் நீர் இருக்கிறது; அது அசைந்தாலும் ஓசை கிடையாது. வற்றிய ஓலை உலர்ந்ததால் காற்றில் கலகலக்கும். அதாவது ஒலி என்பது வலிமையின் அறிகுறி அன்று; வறட்சியின் அறிகுறி.
இப்போது மனிதருக்கு. கற்றவர் பேசுவது குறைவு; காரணம் அறிவு, பயம். சொல் தவறாகிவிடுமோ என்பது அவர்கள் கவலை. கல்வியில்லாதவரோ தயங்காமல் பேசுகிறார். இதில் பாடலின் கடுமை அவரைப் பற்றியதன்று; உண்மையைப் பற்றியது. பேச்சின் அளவு அறிவின் அளவு அன்று என்பதே கருத்து.
Explanation
The verse's image is about moisture. The green palm leaf holds its water; even when it moves it makes no sound. The withered leaf, having dried, rattles in the wind. So sound is not a sign of strength but of dryness.
Now to people. The learned speak little, and what restrains them is knowledge — the fear of saying the wrong thing. The unlearned speaks without hesitating. The verse's severity here is not aimed at him but at the truth of it: the amount of talk is not the amount of understanding.
