கற்றார் உரைக்கும் குற்றம் அற்ற நுண்கேள்வி அவன் நெஞ்சைப் பற்றாமல் உதைத்து நீங்குவதால், பிறகு தன் போன்ற ஒருவன் முகத்தை நோக்கித் தானும் ஓர் இழிவான விளையாட்டைக் கொள்வான்; கீழ் மகன் அத்தகையவன்.
Meaning
Because the flawless, subtle knowledge that the learned speak does not take hold of him but only beats against his heart, the base man looks for the face of another like himself, and takes up some low sport with him.

பாடலின் மையம் மனத்தின் இயக்கத்தில் இருக்கிறது. கற்றார் சொல்லும் நுண்ணிய அறிவு அவன் மனத்தைத் தொடுவதில்லை; அது அவன் நெஞ்சில் மோதி, உரசி, நழுவிப் போகிறது. அதாவது கேட்டல் நடந்தது; ஏற்றல் நடக்கவில்லை.

Explanation
The verse's centre is the working of a mind. The subtle understanding that the learned speak does not touch him; it strikes his heart, grazes it, and slides away. So the hearing happened, but the taking in did not.
After that the verse states a social truth. When what is higher is out of reach, people look for those of their own measure. There they find a game they can accept, and that choice announces what they are. So the surest way to know a man is to see whom he seeks out.
