Explanation
The first half of the verse is a scene in a house. The father says, 'learn.' The son does not take it even as advice; he scorns it. The fault of an untaught son falls not on the father but on himself.
The second half moves time forward. He holds out his writing leaf in a great assembly, and what he has in his hand is only a stylus that slips and will not write. So the fruit of learning is seen in the assembly; where there is none, what stands there is disgrace. A single word refused in youth will be exposed in a moment before many.
To reflect on
The word refused in youth waits for its moment in the assembly.
