Meaning
When those who only chant the text, without having searched out its meaning, mumble out something offensive, the noble — who dread any stain on their good name — reprove them with the tenderness of parents pitying a child of their own.

Explanation
There are two sides in this scene. On one, men who have chanted the text without ever searching its use mumble out something that wounds the gathering. On the other, the noble.
What the noble do is not punishment but correction; the words used recall a parent's tenderness. Those who stumble in an assembly are not driven out; they are expected to mend. And the damage feared here is not another's reputation but the noble man's own. To keep another's ignorance from becoming a stain on their name is what they take as their duty.
To reflect on
The noble do not expel the man who stumbles; they correct him with tenderness.
