Meaning

The discerning take as their very substance the spoken words of the loving, who speak of virtue out of compassion; the worthless fool scorns it, like one who cannot taste the sweetness inside a dish of milk and rice.

Explanation

The comparison is plain: on one side the taste of milk-rice, on the other a tongue that cannot feel it. In the same way, advice spoken with love is a substance; those who can taste it will, and those who cannot will scorn it.

The word for substance matters here. Good counsel is not merely talk; it is a thing to be spent in living. To take it up as substance is wisdom. Those who mock it, the verse insists, are not the wise — what they mock is not the words but a treasure that came their way.

The Bhagavata Purana, Book 4

Daksha's Sacrifice

From the Bhagavata Purana. Daksha was a great Prajapati, learned in every rite. Yet when Shiva did not rise to greet him in an assembly, Daksha took offence and cursed him. Later he held a grand sacrifice and invited every god except Shiva, his own son-in-law.

His daughter Sati came anyway, and Daksha insulted her husband in front of everyone. Unable to bear it, Sati gave up her body in the sacrificial fire. Shiva's fury, in the form of Virabhadra, destroyed the sacrifice and Daksha with it. All of Daksha's learning could not save him from the small, proud mind that mistook a slight for an injury.

To reflect on

Good counsel is not talk but substance; tasting it measures your wisdom.
