The days we have are few, there is no safety for life, and there is blame that many will spread; so why, among many, would a man make a lone enemy of someone and not laugh along with those he meets?

Explanation
Three facts open the verse: the days are few, life is not safe, and blame lives in many mouths. Together they push toward one conclusion.
That conclusion: do not make a private enemy. To stand among many and nurse a quarrel with one shrinks a life badly. So the first three lines measure how much life there is, and the last line removes what does not fit inside that measure. The shortness of days is itself the reason to let a quarrel go.
