Meaning

The shallow neither enjoy themselves, nor do good to those who deserve it, nor reach the safe and good road; bewildered, asleep inside their own gains, they spend their whole life in ruin.

Explanation

The verse works by four denials: they take no joy, they do no good, they do not reach the road, they spend their days in ruin. All four circle one person.

Notice the first: they do not enjoy themselves either. They are of no use to themselves and none to others. 'Asleep within their gains' is a fine image — the wealth is there and the man is sleeping inside it. So the verse says that shallowness is not merely emptiness; it is a loss on both sides. Even if the shallow never see it, the price is paid across a whole lifetime.

To reflect on

Shallowness is not only emptiness; it loses on both sides.
