Explanation

The verse is built as a list of the accused: the crow that should have proclaimed the dawn, the serpent that could have swallowed the moon and ended the night, the three-eyed god whose glance burns away desire, and the watchful mother. All of them were there, and none of it changed.

The last line holds the knot — the road that was taken. Where does the anger land? Not on the god, the crow or the serpent, but on the journey that parted them in search of wealth. So this is grief spoken in the shape of a complaint. Under it is a very simple wish: the night should end and he should come. That wish is the root of every wild figure here.

To reflect on

Grief spoken as a complaint rests on one simple wish.
