Meaning

'Are you able to walk tomorrow behind a young man, through a forest hard to cross?' so you ask; O you of the shining bangles — the moment a man comes by a great horse, that very moment he learns the way to ride it.

Explanation

There is a question and an answer. The question is anxious: a forest hard to cross, tomorrow, walking behind a young man. The answer arrives as a small tale: the man who comes by a great horse learns that very moment how to ride it.

The subtlety is that she does not set out to prove her courage; she points to a plain fact. Skill is not always learned beforehand; when the thing itself is in hand, the skill comes with it. So the very question 'are you able?' is the wrong one. The tone of the verse is confidence — daring will be born, because it arrives when it is needed.

To reflect on

Skill is not always learned in advance; it arrives with the thing itself.
