Meaning

Gazing towards the setting sun, she wipes away with her soft finger the tears that stand in her eyes and sobs; and lying there, counting out the days upon those soft fingers, will she be reckoning up my fault as well? Alas.

Explanation

The voice is the lover's. He is not there, but his mind keeps picturing her. Evening, a sinking sun, tears, a soft finger — the whole series is outward; yet a needle runs inside it.

The needle is the last phrase: my fault. He knows that he is the reason for her grief. The question he puts to himself works like a sentence. Counting the days on her fingers is a fine touch: fingers belong to love, but here they have become a tally-board. The sorrow is in trying to measure how long love has waited.

To reflect on

To know oneself the cause of another's grief is love's hardest sentence.
