Meaning

For those who have no one to embrace their dear one's breast, adorned and girt with flowers, close enough to make it swell, the rain-cloud growls and pours in every quarter; and the water is as though the neytal blossoms were being beaten.

Explanation

The scene is the rainy season, but the rain does not arrive as a gift here; it arrives as pain. For a man with no one to hold, the rain is a voice reminding him of what he has lost. That is why the growl of the downpour matters: the thunder is a prod at his side.

The closing image sharpens it: the water is as if the lilies were being beaten. Rain falls and strikes on those long petals. One rain, two men, two experiences — a feast for the joined, a blow for the parted. That is the finesse of the verse.

To reflect on

One rain is a feast to the joined and a blow to the parted; the fault is not nature's.
