Explanation

In this verse the heroine laughs at herself. 'Uyththal arinthu punal paaypavar' means one who enters a flood though knowing it will carry him away. She says she sulks like such a person. That is, she knows her sulking will end only in defeat and will not last, yet she undertakes to sulk. 'Poyththal' means coming to nothing, proving of no use. She asks herself how comical it is to sulk knowing its futility.

The simile of leaping into the flood shows a daring and an ignorance together. The one who leaps into the current knows he will be dragged; yet for a pleasure he leaps. In the same way sulking has a savour, and it is known that it will melt in union at the end. So we may take it that she sulks for the sake of the joy of it.

Commentators see this verse as the heroine's answer to her friend who asked, 'Why do you sulk?' Some take it as the lament of one unable to sulk, others as the fun of the attempt to sulk.

We too do many things whose end we know. To speak frankly, though they are sometimes against reason, they are sweet to feeling. The deeper meaning of the verse is the loving smile that understands that sweetness.

Through the heroine Valluvar happily records the contradiction of the human mind. The verse also suggests that knowing oneself is not the same as ceasing to be moved, and that both belong to a whole heart.

A story

The Riverbank on Chithra Pournami

This is an imagined story set in Hindu cultural life.

In a village on the bank of the Thamirabarani lived a young woman named Eswari and her husband Kumar. It was the custom of that village that on Chithra Pournami families gathered on the riverbank and ate rice together in the moonlight. Before that day Kumar had been away for a week in another town. He had said that on returning he would bring a sari she liked; but he came empty-handed, and Eswari was hurt.

She told her friend Thangam, 'Today on the riverbank I shall not speak to him at all.' Thangam laughed: 'What you say is nothing new to me. You are like one who steps into a river knowing a flood is coming. And you know that the sulking will not last.' Eswari said, 'No, this time I shall surely hold.'

In the moonlight families sat on the riverbank. Kumar came near and sat beside her. Eswari turned her face away. Kumar opened his bundle and took out a small packet; in it were the jasmine flowers she loved. 'I had not enough money for the sari; but I bought flowers,' he said softly.

Eswari's resolve melted in the moonlight. She turned to him and smiled. 'The sari next time,' she said. Thangam clapped her hands from a distance and laughed.

The story simply shows the human trait of trying to sulk even when one knows it will fail, and the sweetness in it.

To reflect on

What do you keep doing, knowing how it will end, simply because there is a sweetness in the attempt?
