Desire for Reunion

This chapter sings of the eagerness of lovers hastening toward the day of union after separation. Valluvar tells with grace how the heart runs toward union even when it meant to sulk, and how love sees the beloved with eyes that find no fault.

Introduction

The name of this chapter, in the Karpiyal of the Kamathuppaal, is Punarchchi Vidumbal. 'Punarchchi' is meeting, union; 'vidumbal' is eager haste. In the chapter Avarvayin Vidumbal the heroine longed for the coming of the hero who was away; here, with him come or coming, the urgency for union is sung. The content of this chapter is how eagerly the joy of meeting is awaited after the sorrow of separation.

At the start of the chapter the pleasure of love is compared with the pleasure of toddy. Toddy gives joy only when drunk; but love gives joy on being merely thought of and gives joy on being seen. Next the heroine speaks of sulking. When desire has grown to the size of a palmyra, she says, there is no room for sulking even the size of a millet grain. She tells her friend the wonder that her heart, which set out to sulk, had gone to union. The failure of this attempt to sulk returns again and again through the chapter.

In the middle of the chapter come subtle similes. As the eye does not see the pencil that paints kohl upon it, at the sight of him she does not see his fault. When she sees him no fault shows; when she does not, even what is no fault appears a fault. She laughs at herself, like one who leaps into a river knowing its force, that she sulks though she knows her sulking will fail. As toddy is sweet to the drunkard even when it shames him, the hero's chest is sweet to her though he may be at fault.

In the last two verses the hero's voice comes. Desire is softer than a flower, he says, and few know how to act when it blooms. There was sulking in her eye; but before he could embrace, she came to embrace him faster than he. The two voices say in the end one truth: among those who love, union is stronger than sulking.

What this says to us today is that small quarrels do not change the depth of love. The anger we hold in relationships often melts in eagerness. Valluvar praises the honesty with which we may accept that melting without shame.

Chapter story

The Wedding of Murugan and Deivanai at Tirupparankundram

This is the story of the wedding of Murugan and Deivanai told in the Kanda Puranam and in the Tamil devotional tradition of Murugan.

When Surapadman and other asuras tormented the devas, the Kanda Puranam says, Lord Murugan arose from the spark of the third eye of Lord Shiva. He became commander of the devas' army and with his spear conquered Surapadman. After the battle the world of the devas rejoiced. As a sign of gratitude Indra wished to give his daughter Deivanai in marriage to Murugan.

Tradition says that Deivanai had performed penance and waited long to wed Murugan. Her heart had been yearning for his coming. When the battle was over and Murugan came to Tirupparankundram, Deivanai's eagerness bloomed into joy. Her penance came to an end. Murugan, sensing her love, accepted it.

The Kanda Puranam says that the wedding at Tirupparankundram was celebrated with great splendour. The devas, the sages, and Lord Shiva with Parvati came there and blessed them. Indra gave Deivanai into Murugan's hand. That day is still celebrated at Tirupparankundram as the wedding festival on Panguni Uthiram.

In this wedding the end of waiting and the beginning of union come together. The longing in Deivanai's heart was wholly fulfilled. Murugan too, having passed beyond the severity of the battlefield, joined in the sweetness of love. The tale shows valour and love dwelling in one deity.

Here we see the eagerness of 'punarchchi vidumbal' that Valluvar sings: after long penance, the meeting easily melts the heart's sulking and hesitations.

Today at the Tirupparankundram temple Murugan appears together with Deivanai. Devotees worship that wedding form with joy and pray for the welfare of their families and the unity of love.

Tradition honours Tirupparankundram as the first of the six abodes of Murugan. In this hill temple near Madurai, Murugan is enshrined in a rock-cut shrine together with Deivanai. Sangam literature too has praised this place gracefully. Because Murugan here is the Lord of the wedding, young couples and those who wish to be married come to worship.

The Kanda Puranam shows Deivanai as Indra's foster daughter, raised by the elephant Airavata. Tradition says she performed penance precisely to wed Murugan. Devotees feel this wedding to be the fruit of that penance. The length of the waiting makes the wedding still sweeter.

The worship in which Murugan appears with Valli on one side and Deivanai on the other is popular throughout Tamil Nadu. Valli stands for the love of forest life, Deivanai for the love of the world of the devas; Murugan, who accepts both, is honoured as a deity who accepts every land and every people with love.

The simple message of this tale is that for those who have waited with eagerness, union comes sweetly.
